Housing Counseling/Financial Literacy

Program Description:

The Southside Outreach Group in 2006, developed a housing counseling program. This program is currently funded through grant funds from Virginia Housing (formerly VHDA) The intent of the VHDA HUD Housing Counseling and Education Grants is to fund HUD-approved Housing Counseling Programs to educate families and individuals in order to help them make smart decisions regarding improving their housing situation and meeting the responsibilities of tenancy and homeownership.

The Southside Outreach Group has the experience, compassion, and drive to make things happen. They have certified Housing Counselors on staff that are open-minded and innovative and are willing to go that extra-mile for those that are unable or unsure of how to find and afford decent and safe homeownership opportunities.

Our certified housing counselors provide a wide variety of counseling services to low and moderate income to home buyers, homeowners, and renters. The primary objectives are to improve financial management, expand and preserve homeownership opportunities, and improve access to affordable housing. We help families maintain realistic budgets, establish financial goals and avoid common struggles by providing:

• Pre-purchase homeownership counseling
• Homebuyer education
• Financial management training
• Pulling credit reports & Resolving credit issues
• Post purchase counseling

Educational Workshops

Southside Outreach Group also offers free, convenient workshop in one-on-one, virtual, and group sessions to ready the clients for the home buying process. Some of the workshops offered include:

• financial literacy, predatory lending
• fair housing
• pre-purchase homebuyers
• and rental counseling.
